The National Fitness Foundation is the only congressionally chartered nonprofit focused on health and fitness. The Foundation develops public and private partnerships to help expand youth physical activity in America.  It is the official charity of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition.

In 1956, President Eisenhower established the President’s Council on Youth Fitness, designed to raise awareness of and determine a plan to increase physical fitness in America’s youth. The results of this were to develop a national testing program, known today as the Presidential Youth Fitness Program.

President Kennedy expanded Eisenhower’s vision to include Americans of all ages, and led a nationwide public service campaign to promote physical activity and fitness, complete with educational films and the promotion of exemplary schools.

The National Fitness Foundation was congressionally chartered as a private nonprofit on December 22, 2010, when President Obama signed the "National Foundation on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition Establishment Act" (Public Law No: 111-332).

Soon after the National Fitness Foundation was established, the organization took over the administration of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP), the national model for fitness assessment and education in schools. With the Foundation’s guidance, the PYFP program was updated and expanded to reach more than 20 million children across the country.
