Michael McConnell, MD, MSEE

Dr. McConnell is a Clinical Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he sees patients in the Preventive Cardiology Clinic and teaches fellows and students, including in the Stanford Biodesign program. 


Dr. McConnell is a native of Brooklyn and did his BS and MS in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at MIT followed by his MD at Stanford. He specialized in Cardiovascular Medicine and Imaging at Brigham and Women’s and Beth Israel Hospitals in Boston and then joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He returned to Stanford in 1998, leading clinical and research programs in cardiovascular imaging, prevention, and mobile health. He was Director of Cardiovascular MRI, Preventive Cardiology, and Cardiovascular Health Innovation where he oversaw the top-enrolling MyHeart Counts physical activity and cardiovascular health study launched with Apple in 2014. In 2015 he joined Google leading cardiovascular health, including Verily’s Study Watch, Google Fit’s Heart Points, and Fitbit’s Irregular Rhythm Notifications. He continues to advise companies on digital health technology and AI to promote cardiovascular health and prevention. Dr. McConnell has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles, including research and guidelines on technology-based assessment and promotion of physical activity and fitness, plus was the principal investigator of multiple research and training grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association (AHA). He has been a member of the Consumer Technology Association’s working groups on Physical Activity and Mobile Health and co-chaired their Cardiovascular Technology Solutions group in collaboration with the American College of Cardiology. He is a founding member of the AHA’s Health Technology Advisory Group and co-chaired the task force for AHA’s 2030 Impact Goal.
